2008 Arkansas State Singles by Dann Schwinger

Another season has come and another State tournament is over.    We ended up with 40 players and had some of the best matches I can remember in recent years.

The Open division was won by college student and 1st time Open champion Drew Toland.   Drew defeated David Dennis in the finals.  David started off good and then put his face into the wall. Not sure if it was the blood or the stars but it seemed to take a little of the wind out of Davids’ sails.

The “A” final was won by probably the most improved player in the state over the last couple of years.    Joe Clark beat Chris Nichols who also is in his first year of playing in the “A” division.   HEY JOE, welcome to the Open division.    Continue to improve and you’ll do fine.

The “B” division probably had some of the most exciting and closely contested matches.  Mike McKinney and Wade Goodwin fought their way through a tough “B” bracket to get to the finals, where Wade got the best of Mike in a long close tie-breaker.   I believe it was 11-8.   Bodies were flying all over the floor on almost every rally.

The “C” division was won by newcomer to the tournament field as Mike Pate was his first tournament and Kerry Clark wondering when he would finally win the “C”s.

The “D” division saw Kevin McGrath beat Darren Davis in a closely fought final 15-14, 15-13.

For all results , you can see the actual draws on the web site. http://www.r2sports.com/tourney.asp?TID=3559

I want to thank everyone who took the time to play this past week-end.  With our state tournaments being closed to ARA players only, we need each and every one of you in order to have a decent draw in each division.

Don’t forget there are still going to be a few monthly shoot-outs in Bentonville.   More info from Micah will follow on that. Next one is April 12.
